Celebrating Community Impact with the Trust Awards

I have been a fan of the Trust Awards Program since the beginning. When the program launched in 2014, I oversaw Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for Johnson & Johnson in Switzerland. I loved the idea of having a platform to showcase the community engagement initiatives my colleagues were leading across our region in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). I imagined the Awards Program to be a source of inspiration, creating an opportunity for employees to exchange best practices and learn from each other how to meaningfully give back to our communities.

Johnson & Johnson has a long tradition of supporting the communities where we live and work. Our employees are driven to live the Company Credo values and act when they see help is needed. The Trust Awards allow us to celebrate these efforts and thank the many volunteers involved.

Leading the Trust Awards Committee the past three years, I have loved seeing the variety of programs happening on the ground. From a Bike Challenge across Ireland organized to connect employees from various sites while raising money for a local hospital, to a mentoring program for entrepreneurs in South Africa to create and save jobs – all programs helped to shape the present and future of local communities in their own way.

Without a doubt, the winners from the 2017/2018 Trust Awards Special Edition have continued the Johnson & Johnson tradition of giving back in purposeful ways. As part of our 10 Years of Trust campaign celebrating a decade of empowering change makers on the front lines of health, we also grew how we give back to winning programs. In this year’s special addition, we created new categories (including Employees’ Choice) and increased the total prize money from €35,000 to €50,000. Prize money is reinvested back into the programs to continue their work.


Along with my fellow Trust Award Committee members from across Johnson & Johnson, I’m pleased to share with you this year’s winning programs:

Humanitarian Support Winner: The “Support for Unaccompanied Minor Refugees” program responded to the sudden increase of refugees arriving in Austria with the migrant crisis in 2015. Janssen Alpine decided to focus its efforts on the most vulnerable group of refugees and supported SOS Children’s Villages to provide cultural education and language training to 13 unaccompanied minor refugees from Syria, Afghanistan and Mongolia. The trainings provided children with the skills and community they needed to become thriving members of society again.

Employee Engagement Winner & Employees’ Choice Award Winner: 1,254 J&J EMEA employees cast their vote selecting “Skill based volunteering” as their favorite program. The program supports partners organizations TADA and IMC Weekendschool in empowering children from disadvantaged areas to make conscious decisions about their future, school and career path choices through long-term coaching. Over 50 top-scientists and supporters from Johnson & Johnson Benelux participated in creating fun learning experiences for nearly 3,000 children aged 10-14 years. From chemistry experiments to lessons on DNA, cells and molecules – children were inspired to wonder and create.

Healthcare Initiatives Winner: “Point of soberness” – addresses addiction – a widespread public health issue in Russia. In collaboration with Russian Regional Health Ministries, the program launched Russia’s first comprehensive alcohol addiction rehabilitation program, helping vulnerable people reclaim their health and life. For example, supporting parents at risk of losing their parental rights due to alcoholism. More than 60% of program participants successfully complete remission after Year 1 of the program.

Social Business Practices Winner: This new category recognizes programs that leverage J&J business services to drive positive community impact. Winning program “Social Inclusion in Manufacturing” celebrates a long-term partnership with Stiftung altra, an institution that provides protected employment for people with physical and mental disabilities within manufacturing and packaging. Janssen Supply Chain transferred a new packaging process to altra and supported them in developing their quality management system. This positioned altra with a sound foundation to expand its programs further in the pharmaceutical sector.

Year after year, I am impressed by the variety and quality of programs nominated for the Trust Awards. They confirm my belief that our role as Johnson & Johnson employees extends far beyond our job descriptions, and that generous efforts to share our privilege with others in need should be celebrated. I know this year’s external panel of CSR judges join me in thanking participants in all 38 programs across 20 countries that were nominated for dedicating their time, passion and strategic thinking to join the front lines of care in their communities.

And thank you to the nearly 5,000 Johnson & Johnson employees across EMEA who voted to remind us that employees do care that their company be a voice for good in the world.
